New FECPAK Worm ID Test gives farmers rapid parasite identification

After years of R&D, Techion’s new FECPAK Worm ID Test will be launched at the NSA Sheep Event on Tuesday 28th July 2026.

The FECPAK Worm ID Test enables rapid, routine species-level parasite identification for the UK sheep industry, giving farmers quicker access to information to prevent wormer resistance and improve animal wellbeing.

FECPAK’s Worm ID Test uses high-resolution imaging together with a new approach of analysing egg shape, size and structure to identify the species of parasite present. Results are available within hours of imaging, a significant time saving on traditional larval culture species testing, which usually takes 10 - 14 days for results.

Worm ID Tests build on the existing FECPAK faecal egg count (FEC) test by giving rapid identification of parasite species, helping farmers and advisers move from measuring parasite burden to making more targeted treatment decisions. Every result is securely saved in the FECPAK system so farmers, veterinarians and advisors can monitor parasite burden by animal, flock or paddock over time to help predict and prevent parasite infestation.

Despite the importance of identifying parasite species, this type of testing has historically been underused because of cost, time and limited availability. In recent years, specialist laboratories have introduced tests capable of detecting Haemonchus in worm egg counts. However, a full species breakdown still required a larval culture.

Supporting Smarter Parasite Control
The addition of Worm ID testing for sheep strengthens the FECPAK platform as a comprehensive tool for parasite management.

By combining FEC data with species identification, farmers and advisors can:

  • Compliment regular faecal egg counts with seasonal Worm ID tests to understand which parasites are present.
  • In cases where lack of efficacy/resistance is observed, learn which species are surviving treatment.
  • Make more targeted and effective treatment decisions.
  • Support sustainable control strategies and help combat wormer resistance.

Farmers can access the Worm ID Test in two ways: online as a test kit purchase through the FECPAK postal test kit service or, deploy the new FECPAK Micro-I 300 to undertake Worm ID in vets, laboratories and retailers. The flexibility of postal and in-house testing options ensures the FECPAK Worm ID Test is available to operations of all sizes from individual farms to veterinary practices and diagnostic labs.

Launch Event
FECPAK will show the new Worm ID Test at the NSA Sheep Event at Malvern on Tuesday 28th July 2026.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • See the new Worm ID Test being undertaken.
  • See how the new Micro-I 300 which images the Worm ID test integrates with the FECPAK workflow.
  • Learn how Worm ID testing benefits sustainable parasite control.
  • Discuss implementation with the team.

The Worm ID Test is the first product to be launched as part of an expanded testing capability. In the future, the Worm ID Test will be extended to cattle. In New Zealand a Facial Eczema test has been released.
